Who is Thomas Hübl?

Short Biography

Thomas Hübl was born in Vienna in 1971. As a 26-year-old medical student who was also very interested in bodywork and related therapies, he felt a strong inner calling. He took the radical step of following this inner wish, abandoning his studies and spending the next four years in retreat in the Czech Republic. During this time he did almost nothing except meditate and explore the spaces of inner consciousness. Looking back on this time, Thomas speaks of a fundamental opening that took place.

After returning to Vienna, he started offering one-to-one sessions. His ability to touch people very deeply and encourage them to take a look beyond what they usually see soon led to invitations to lead larger workshops.

His popularity then grew further and he became known internationally. Since 2004 Thomas has been active worldwide, organising talks, workshops, trainings, tonings and larger events such as the popular Celebrate Life Festival or his Healing Events which have brought together thousands of Germans with many Israelis to acknowledge, face, and heal the cultural shadow left by the Holocaust. When he is not travelling, he lives in Berlin and Tel Aviv together with his partner, the Israeli artist Yehudit Sasportas.

What does Thomas Hübl do?

1. Sharing the Presence

Thomas Hübl developed his Sharing the Presence programme based on years of practice and his work with countless individuals and groups. These groups create a space which repeatedly enables a deepening of one’s own presence, transparency, compassion and ability to express oneself authentically. As a holistic approach, “Sharing the Presence” offers a way to lead an awakened, responsible everyday life. Together with Ken Wilber and Andrew Cohen, Thomas Hübl is one of the most internationally important representatives of an evolutionary spirituality. His work encourages us to question whether the way we interpret our life and reality is still appropriate. In his workshops and events he leads participants to a deeper level of self-concept and personal responsibility.

Thomas motivates everyone to realise their inherent potential and express it in a tangible worldly way. His focus is on a new “Culture of We” and on the practice of a timeless wisdom – a mystical insight which lies at the core of every religion and wisdom tradition. 2. North American Tour 2011

Thomas Hübl visited in April and October 2011 the U.S. and Canada. The response from participants was great. Hundreds of people attended his lectures and workshops. The teaching tour ran from New York, Boston, Boulder/ Colorado over Denver, Berkeley/ San Francisco to Vancouver/ Canada. Seattle was added as another city. Thomas presented his work not only to many people, he used the journey also for meetings with other spiritual teachers. In Denver he met Ken Wilber. In California he had an exchange with Terry Patten, Craig Hamilton and Claire Zammit, Tami Simon and Dustin DiPerna.
The work of sharing the Presence started to root in the U.S. The newly formed practice groups in four towns, which are managed from Germany, are a sign for that. And there are a lot of interest in longer, more intensive trainings. Multi-day workshops are being planned - and a one-year training in collaboration with Terry Patten.

3. Academy of Inner Science

His positive experiences in his workshops and training groups led Thomas Hübl to found the Academy of Inner Science (AIS) in 2008. This offers a platform for training, workshops, research groups, charitable events and interdisciplinary exchange. Its aim is to create links between inner wisdoms and the outer world’s knowledge. For example, Thomas is working together with the Bender Institute of Neuroimaging in Giessen, Germany, which is researching into the effects of meditation on participants in the AIS Timeless Wisdom Training program: www.bion.de

The three-year Timeless Wisdom Training programme concentrates on both transcending the self and active participation in efforts to meet the challenges of today’s society, in the form of projects, events and social engagement. Thomas and his team of lecturers offer a training programme that promotes putting the practice of awakeness and transparency over an extended period of time into the focus of our lives. Yoga, tai chi and meditation, creativity and intuition workshops as well as stillness retreats complement the programme for the participants who will move within the course of the three years through a clearing process of self-development and train various skills, such as their intuition, interpersonal skills or the capacity to interact. An introduction into an integral perspective will also be part of the training. More about the training:

In the Academy, interdisciplinary research groups have formed on issues such as economics, education and medicine/therapy. The groups aim to develop new approaches and coaching models, and to encourage a more awakened culture of communication in these areas. More information about the circles:

4. Celebrate Life Festival

The annual Celebrate Life Festival has been held since 2004. Thomas Hübl and his team offer a sophisticated 10-day programme, including about 40 speakers and artists offering lectures, workshops and other events for more than 1000 visitors.
In 2011 the central focus of the benefit event is Mysticism. International representatives from Christianity, Judaism, Sufism, Zen-Buddhism and the Integral scene will span topics from the spiritual traditions to the newest consciousness research. Among them Michael Laitman (about Kabbalah), the Sufi master Shahabuddin David Less, and Zen masters Niklaus Brantschen and Pia Gyger. Representatives of an evolutionary spirituality are Andrew Cohen and Diane Musho Hamilton. Via phone, as in the past years, we will also be able to hear Ken Wilber.

There is daily yoga and tai chi as well as the meditation, toning and “sharing” sessions from Thomas Hübl. And there is also plenty of time to get to know different models of consciousness, experience intense community and simply have fun. A deep sense of connection arises among the participants, which means the festival automatically becomes a platform for projects and visions of a new “feeling of we”. All Infos

5. The Healing Events

Thomas Hübl is also the initiator of the Synchronized Humanity Tour. Large-scale events are held in various cities to heal and integrate collective human issues. In April 2010, the fourth Healing Event took place in Berlin, with the title “Truth Heals”. Dealing with the Holocaust and the manifold issue of Germany’s role in World War II, the event was attended by almost 1000 people who wanted to direct their concentration towards healing and integrating these collective shadow aspects, which are handed down from generation to generation.

Panel discussions, lectures and a mass meditation provided opportunities to look at and feel the issues that normally remain well suppressed. Participants were particularly moved by a live connection to Israel, where Shlomo Shoham and Efrat Sar Shalom had organised a parallel event. Tom Steininger from enlightennext hosted the programme, and the guests were also addressed by the Holocaust survivor Eva Kor via Skype and Ken Wilber by telephone. 5. Thomas Hübl’s book "Sharing the Presence"

In August 2009, Thomas Hübl’s book "Sharing the Presence – Where were you until now? How presence transforms your life." was published by J. Kamphausen Verlag (the original is in German). In his book, Thomas Hübl develops a holistic approach which considers all life issues as an expression of the ever-present timeless wisdom. His main concern here is how a new "Culture of We" characterises the next step of human development. If a spiritual development has such an enormous relevance for both our individual and our collective life experiences, how can a leap in humanity’s consciousness lead to changes in our post-modern society?

The Spiritual Scope of Thomas Hübl: One Voyager's Cosmic Report 2011
Our Vancouver evening gathering began with a silent meditation. There was a palpable sense of rest, stillness, and deep ease in the room. As that still ease pervaded the room there was a strong current of things being filled. Thomas then spoke for about an hour with some time for questions and discussion. After the talk and the discussion period, Thomas led the group through a short (but powerful) exercise in what he calls Transparent Communication...

The Shadows Are Calling Us – Interview with Thomas Hübl (NRG/Maariv)
If you saw Thomas Huebl on the street, you could probably guess that he was an artist or a man of philosophical or spiritual inclinations. He has that refinement, sensitivity, ease of being and quiet joy that spiritual work and awakened consciousness tend to cultivate. And indeed, Huebl, a 40-year-old spiritual teacher from Germany, has dedicated his life to spiritual development - first in himself and in the last few years together with others... read more

The Mysticism of Our Times - Ancient Wisdom in New Outfit (by Thomas Hübl)
A modern mysticism always carries the Timeless Wisdom within but it also acknowledges that the outer life continues to develop. We need answers to contemporary questions. God – or the sacred space or the mystic depth dimension – needs a place again in our society. If we give this priority in our life everything else will follow. We will establish an economy and science, a political programme and education that are aligned with it. What does a modern path of mysticism beyond a traditional God image look like and which path can we take in order to unite the power of the traditions with the evolution of life? read more

Beyond Awakening: The Future of Spiritual Practice – Teleseminar with Terry Patten and Thomas Hübl
Like many of you, I loved my dialog with Thomas Hübl. As it unfolded, we got into a flow - of staying open and present with each other, and also aware of the larger field within which our conversation was arising. Thomas is amazingly clear, fluid, awake, and playful, isn’t he? - It was like a dance in which the music could only keep playing if Thomas and I continually kept getting “out of the way” of a larger tide of living intelligence, and kept allowing it to emerge - through him, through me, and through all of us gathered.
